Through a dynamic new system entitled Social Playback, the network’s popular truTV2GO.com will now capture and curate the most entertaining comments about a series episode from Twitter and Facebook, synchronize them with the episode’s time code, then display the archived “live” conversation during online viewing of full episodes. truTV will make the new Social Playback conversation-streaming function available for seven series that have been airing since June, with plans for a potential expansion to include truTV’s full lineup of original series in the near future. truTV also plans to incorporate the Social Playback feature within the truTV 2GO mobile app in 2013.

To make this new breakthrough possible, truTV worked with Tomorrowish, developer of the first-ever DVR for social media. At the center of the technology is the “Tomorrowish Machine Curation” tool, which uses rules-based filtering of posts and a proprietary scoring system in order to select and stream the best and most relevant posts. The tool also merges East and West Coast comments into a single synchronized conversation and allows for fine-tuning the curation down to individual posts, a function unique to the Tomorrowish platform.

“Reality programs have some of the highest social media engagement, so working with truTV is a fantastic opportunity to help increase that engagement with their programming,” said Tomorrowish CEO Mick Darling.

In addition to working with truTV, Tomorrowish also partnered with E! Entertainment Network and developed a tool that displayed social conversations for its talent discovery show “Opening Act” that premiered in the summer of 2012.

“There’s a natural connection between finding musical talent on the Internet and displaying the conversations from their fans,” said Mick Darling, CEO, Tomorrowish. “We were excited to connect fans and viewers who followed the developments of new talent on ‘Opening Act.’”

Tomorrowish offers services for content providers, as well as for viewers. For content providers the service helps engage their audiences and their Social Networks by using the “Tomorrowish Machine Curation” tool, which displays the most interesting and relevant posts. With the rules-based filtering of posts, it allows for fine-tuning the curation down to individual posts, unique to the Tomorrowish platform.

For viewers, the service curates new and archived posts about the video stream in sync with the original content, whether they were posted live, three hours, or three months later. Conversations from multiple airings, East Coast to West Coast, or later can be synced later and merged together.

Frankly, this isn’t about the prizes, though they’d be nice to get. The mentorships are better that “a nice to have” and I have high hopes they will give our team much needed insight into the huge number of challenges we are going to encounter.

The big deal, the thing that not only makes incubators valuable and useful, but also what sets MassChallenge apart from the other incubators, and accelerators out there is scale. MassChallenge is the worlds largest startup accelerator program with 125 finalists taking competing in the same space for the $1M in cash prizes and over $4M in services. All those startups will be working out of the same space interacting on a daily basis. When I compare this to the other excellent accelerator we were short listed for with only 5 startups, the potential for synergies and transferring knowledge should be obvious. In this case the old military saw that “Quantity has a quality all its own.” really highlights the quality provided by this huge quantity of passionate, talented, naive, grizzled, clever, hustling, creative entrepreneurs.

I personally have years long relationships with key personnel or founders of at least two other startups that made it to the finals. The interconnectedness of all these companies is a powerful force to Get Things Done in new innovative ways. Nate Aune a founder of one of a very cool finalist company, Appsembler and I have known each other since 2006 when I helped out with a Python based CMS (Plone) Meetup group he ran. That was even before I decided to really make a go of being an entrepreneur, but Nate was already doing it, and seeing the stuff he and others were working on at that meetup and others definitely helped me make the decision to jump into entrepreneurship.

I see MassChallenge as a great opportunity to interact and share all the crazy energy, experience, and innovation that comes from getting all these startups in one place. When I’m at the gym and lots of people are working their asses off it keeps me highly motivated to get off mine, and I plan on spending the next few months working my ass off surrounded by a bunch of talented people working just as hard.

For more info check out Tomorrowish.com and watch some of your favorite shows with Tomorrowish on Tomorrowish.tv.

Tomorrowish Named MassChallenge Finalist

May 30, 2012 - Cambridge, MA - Tomorrowish, (www.tomorrowish.com) the first DVR for social media, announced today that the company has been named a finalist in MassChallenge, the world’s largest startup competition. Of the 1,237 startups who applied to the MassChallenge 2012 Accelerator Program, 125 startups were accepted as Finalists.

“We are thrilled to be finalists in MassChallenge,” said Mick Darling, CEO, Tomorrowish. “While I did the initial presentation, it was all of our work as a team to get a working product used by paying clients that got us into the program. We’ve been building our technology and customer base for over a year. This opportunity will help us continue to build our business and benefit from the energy, mentoring and innovation of other startups in the incubator program.”

In October, MassChallenge will award $1 million in prizes to several finalists.

While the social element of television is not new, Social TV is a relatively new concept used to describe the emerging generation of television services that integrate with other communication platforms like voice, chat and social media on the web. Social TV leverages the power of social networks to create a new type of highly interactive user experience.

According to a report from Nielsen, 86 percent of U.S. smartphone owners and 88 percent of tablet owners use their devices to watch TV. Moreover, about 69 percent of tablet owners use two screens regularly each week, and more than 26 percent use single screens several times a day.

Social activity growth in conversation and check-ins on TV programming has increased to about 91 percent year over year, according to a study by social TV tracking service Trendrr.TV.

Adding to the emergence of Social TV, another report says about 72 percent of respondents used Twitter, Facebook or a mobile app to comment on shows. The recent study from marketing agency Digital Clarity found that use the devices to communicate with friends while watching TV.

“TV shows with small audiences can generate enormous traffic on Twitter,” said Digital Clarity’s founder, Reggie James. “Social TV is a new platform for engaging with a TV show and has turned TV programs into online events.”

February’s social TV mega event- the Super Bowl – was the latest example where saw the trend of ad spending on national network and cable TV. Advertising time during the Super Bowl this year was estimated to cost $3.5 million per minute.

Social TV Content Providers

Media companies are now developing new ways to take advantage of Social TV trends that have heightened the level of commitment among loyal viewers.

The online gaming platform TwitchTV announced the launch of its live tournament applications for mobile users across iOS and Android. The main functionality of the TwitchTV mobile application is the ability to view all available streaming content on the web in high definition and in full screen mode. It also includes a search engine and easy navigation between the different game platforms.

Users can follow their favorite channels directly from the video stream and see a list of channels that are broadcast live. They can also chat with other users while viewing the videos.

TweePLayer, dubbed the first DVR for social media, provides social media content associated with TV shows, advertisements, conferences, films, political events and more. The platform uses social TV data to stream time-shifted context for video players like Hulu, so you can see tweets about a program when you watch the replay online.

As TweePlayer expands to include social content beyond Twitter, it’s rebranded itself with a new name: Tomorrowish.

“Fans post millions of social media messages about their favorite TV shows every day, and we’re bringing those conversations together in context to make it easy to find the best posts,” said Tomorrowish CEO Mick Darling. “Live TV and social media content is a great combination. Time-shifted TV viewed with the curated content of Tomorrowish’s time-shifted Social TV makes this combination even more powerful and fun.”

Tomorrowish is a system designed to retrieve past conversations from Twitter to sync with any program that we are seeing, regardless of the time. The company’s Machine Curation tool helps content providers engage their audiences and their social networks by displays the most relevant posts.

Social TV is also a Great Marketing Platform

Social TV is also a great marketing opportunity, providing a new way to approach potential customers and build relationships based on affinity, and the value of sharing, participation and exchange.

Companies can access personal user preferences to improve television advertising. In addition, companies can determine the best strategy to approach marketing via connected TVs, use social ratings analytics tools to find and target lean-forward audiences and leverage the second screen to drive synched, deeper brand engagement.

Darling recognizes social media’s impact on TV, and hopes to differentiate his startup by following the viewers. Instead of leveraging social TV to keep people glued to the TV in real time, he wants to bring the conversation to the content, no matter when or where that content’s being consumed. As a result, Tomorrowish is also able to infer a great deal more data about consumer viewing patterns, like when they pause and resume playback, which parts of a program are most or least likely to get paused, and what context emerges from viewer responses at any given part of the program.

Building a market around that data is an important next step for Tomorrowish, as they determine the best way to make the leap from startup to full-blown revenue. In the short-term Darling’s company is focused on TV, creating an experience that doesn’t force viewers to disengage from the social scene if they miss 5 or 50 minutes of a real-time program.

“Long term I’d like to see Tomorrowish be the default place where people go to have watercooler conversations about all media content,” Darling says. “We’re great for TV but we’re good for conferences, political events, education, government meetings and everything in between. If there’s media and a discussion, we can be the thing that ties those two together.”

Spring 2011

We launched our first public Alpha in March at SXSW getting our name up in lights with the public launch of LaunchRock.

We got some fantastic press attention a few weeks later from Mashable, ReadWriteWeb, The Huffington Post, not to mention @TwitterMedia with a favorite Tweet of mine “It had to happen: time-shifted Tweets!”

Summer 2011

We got lots of interest and feedback, made a ton of changes, diving back into development of our key features of Machine Curation, content filtering, and syncing to multiple video players and made partnerships with Hulu as a Hulu distribution partner so we could display premium Hulu content on our site.

Fall 2011

We relaunched the site with a completely new design, and really built out the core functionality. We now have elevated access to the Twitter streaming API and can capture, filter and display Tweets for all primetime TV shows without breaking a sweat. We now can capture content from Facebook fan pages and post to Facebook as well as Twitter.

Today

Just in the past couple months, we launched our 1.0 Public Beta, Presented TweePLayer at the SocialTV Summit in NYC and [The SocialTV Event], and had an awesome Podcast interview with The Bella Buzz.

Tomorrowish

We will be doing a big launch showing off new features and lots of new content on our main site, and soon we’ll get to show off some awesome content and integration for a national cable network.

2012 is going to be a big year for SocialTV and us and with all the changes we will be rebranding to focus on the bigger things we are doing in the future.

Some Social(TV) Conversations

Back in October I went down to Atlanta for the “Social TV Event” held by @UserInsight a pretty cool research group that does user testing for Apps and websites among others. Over the past year they have been doing a $500,000 research project into how social media affects consumer TV consumption.

For this event they presented a lot of their data about the demographics of TV and SocialTV. They dug into their data about which viewers are more likely to watch TV live, or time-shifted. They split up their demographics into personality types for people who chat on Twitter to friends, random strangers, or no one at all in particular. For the “Social TV Event” they had guest speakers from several older and new companies in the SocialTV space including yours truly.

Some of the cool tech companies included at the event:

Yahoo’s IntoNow product that listens to the audio “fingerprint” of a TV show to find the moment in a show someone is watching.

SnappyTV which lets viewers take “clips” of the last several seconds of a show to share out to their social network.

Watchitoo: Which tries to make live online viewing of events and meetings more interactive.

Clearleap: Which enables video applications for multi-channel video programming distributors.

And of course TweePLayer.

We all got to show off some of our the cool things our products do, but what was even more interesting were the panel discussions about how we all are addressing the SocialTV marketplace from vastly different angles.

You can see one of the panels below with the TweePLayer curated social conversation right there ready for you to add your own comments, or you can go to our Social TV Event page for any of the panels.

For this second TweePLayer Showcase we wanted to show use in the realm of politics. There are several other political events that we will be doing a longer post about later.

We have been getting requests to show how Tweeplayer integrates with YouTube and collecting Tweets for a higher bandwidth Twitter conversation from a broadcast event.

The video below is President Obama’s speech to the University of Maryland from July 22nd as the debt ceiling debate was nearing the deadline and can also be seen on our main site.

TweePLayer Showcase: SXSW Presentation #Twesearch By Rey Junco

This is the first in a series of posts we will be making to showcase TweePLayer’s different tools and the variety of content TweePLayer can be useful for. This showcase series will have content from conferences, TV shows, online webcasts, and more. Today we are showing off the TweePLayer embeddable widget. This widget can be used on most blogs and pretty much any site that you have direct control over the layout. This Social Video Widget is also compatible with many web based ad networks.

Todays Showcase

The Showcase for today is a presentation by Rey Junco, a college professor and researcher who studies how social media use affects college students. He took the audio recording of the presentation he made at SXSW in March and added the slide deck from his presentation to the audio. TweePLayer harvested the Tweets using his hashtag #twesearch during his presentation. The online conversation is active and engaged throughout the presentation.

Please login with your twitter credentials at any time and tweet into the conversation. Your Tweets will go out to Twitter immediately and can include a link back to the conversation here. If you click on the links that Professor Junco has highlighted below you will be taken the presentation hosted on our main TweePLayer page. Those links will take you to the specific moments in the presentation he has highlighted. If you Tweet while watching the presentation from those links your Tweet will have a direct link to that moment within the presentation you were Tweeting about.

Suggested Links

The links for later in the video may take a while to load since the Vimeo video must load from the beginning. Other video players like YouTube, and others can jump right to the direct moment in the video.

Does social media use relate to college student engagement? (4:45 mins)

Use of Facebook as a Negative and Positive predictor of engagement (8:03 mins)

Students engaged more and created a great feedback loop on Twitter (18:15 mins)

Persistence of students in school based on Twitter engagement (40:20 mins)

TweePLayer syncs the contextual Twitter(tm) conversation about an event to video, audio, or any other kind of media, of that event.

Users can select conversations collected from Twitter about their favorite TV shows, sporting events, conferences, or any other event. Then they can play the show on their TV and ‘Play’ the Twitter conversation synced in real time with the event. TweePLayer users can take part in the conversation at any time and their new Tweets are synced to the moment in the show they are Tweeting about, so that anyone else using TweePLayer after them will see the new Tweet placed in that same moment in the conversation.
TweePLayer has a growing list of over 5000 events from TV shows, sports, conferences, to movie previews and podcasts. TweePLayer automatically harvests the conversations for most major TV shows in the US, and users can create their own Twitter event harvests by following @TweePLayer on Twitter and adding an event.

AI Enhanced Hash-tagsTweePLayer uses AI that tracks a conversation about an event and discovers new parts of the conversation. It dynamically adjusts target keywords to a particular event. ”We are constantly adding new layers of intelligent tools to sift through all of the Twitter conversations for not only relevant but higher value parts of the conversation so users won’t be overwhelmed with tens of thousands of relevant but unimportant Tweets. We believe this will lead to a more vibrant and intelligent social media conversation.” said TweePLayer CEO Mick Darling

TweePLayer Allows Whole New Kinds of ConversationsNow that conversations can easily be synced to events TweePLayer will soon allow users to create conversation ‘Channels’ about an event. A “spoiler free” channel for TV shows that have already aired, or a “Book Club” channel to discuss a show in depth on any number of possible common interests for people, or even an MST3K-Style channel. We will soon have channels directly reflecting your social graph allowing you to ‘throttle” your conversations so you can discuss events with just the people you are connected to on Twitter or Facebook, or discuss town hall meetings with people in your area.

TweePLayer Advancements Coming SoonTweePLayer is optimizing its website to properly work with the iPad and Android browsers and is developing dedicated iOS and Android apps. APIs will be available for other Twitter clients to filter out spoiler Twitter content as events are discussed live, and allow other clients to sync time-codes with TweePLayer. TweePLayer is free for users on the web and people who are interested in getting access to new features and exclusive content before they are available publicly can signup at SIgnup.TweePLayer.com

TweePLayer’s TeamBased in Boston and New York City, they have been involved in multiple startup companies and projects. Their recent involvements include several different social media related projects.

Mick Darling, cofounder and CEO, has worked on social media and technology startups for years. He cofounded BioStrut LLC a company that worked to commercialize artificially grown tissue technology from Drexel University. He also built out the IT infrastructure at A123Systems during their explosive growth from a few hundred to several thousand employees. Recently he lead a team at the Boston HackDay Challenge to build YasminApp.com a Twitter and short message encryption application for smart-phones and the web. YasminApp is an open source project inspired by the Jasmine revolution in China, the protests in Egypt and elsewhere in the middle east, and the “Original API of Boston” used to overthrow tyrants and allow freedom of speech and democratic representation for all.

Phil Dreizen, Lead Developer, runs a software consulting company, Kupad, in Brooklyn, NY. He is also the main developer at TuringsCraft, which produces Codelab a web-based interactive programming exercise system for college introductory programming classes. He also developed “StarSquare” at the first Foursquare hackathon. StarSquare is the first virtual trading game built by Gendoki, a virtual goods and virtual currency game layer built on top of real world locations.

Dan Afonso is president of EnfoldIT.com, a complete hardware and software consulting firm in Central Massachusetts. He developed and manages system infrastructure for TweePLayer. Mike, Dan and Mick were classmates at WPI, Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

About TweePLayer and Tomorrowish LLC

TweePLayer just opened its first major round of fundraising after bootstrapping for the last year. TweePLayer is owned by Tomorrowish LLC and has a growing list of technical IP being developed for intelligent keyword discovery, context detection, and synchronization of social media and other content.

What I Needed

I had just got back from SXSW where, my startup Tweeplayer, had competed in the LaunchRock SXSW Battle of the Startups. We used it to gather prelaunch user interest and contact info so we could launch the site with a solid base of original users. We got our logo up on a 22’ projection screen right in the middle of Austin, got a good number of interested people looking and actually signing up on the site, and readied the site to launch. I’ve been working to get the full list of people that requested a invite out to them without triggering a spam filter and to do it programmatically from the signup list. Enter PostMark from the AppSumo bundle. When I saw what it offered, it was an excellent opportunity to build a nice tool on their API without having to build my own email system, and get some cool analytics rolled into it as well.

Any Opportunity To Use Python and Django

I saw that PostMark has a ton of different pre-built libraries on there site and the Python example had a Django implementation for good measure. I am not the Technical co-founder of Tweeplayer but I absolutely know the value of being able to dive into the code. So, I’ve been learning “Python the Hard Way” for a little while now, and just started some Django projects to build my chops. My friend has a new startup called DjangoZoom, which is like Heroku for Django apps, that I have an account on to try out and see how a beginning Django developer will use it and where the pain points may be. It is solidly built, and I have been able to easily deploy simple apps to it, but this was my first implementation of a useful tool for Tweeplayer on it. I easily deployed the sample Django project for PostMark from my fork on Github of the original implementation, changed it to use my own credentials, switched it to post HTML email and use bcc for the invite list.

Why Is This Interesting

I am not a strong programmer…yet, but the tools and distributed knowledge-base that we are swimming in as entrepreneurs today are deep and wide. I kind of littered the text of this blogs with links to give you an idea of what is out there, and I think any smart and motivated entrepreneur can take advantage of what is around them to create something great. I have always felt that the best use of time is spent both learning and doing at the same time. With the AppSumo SXSW toolset the benefits to building on these super useful lego pieces should be obvious. I only used one in this example, but I have used, or plan on using Twillio, Texting.ly, uTest and am trying to schedule my time to catch a Startup Weekend among all the other tools out there I use everyday. They all help entrepreneurs learn, push their own boundaries, and grow their startups, which can only be a good thing.

TWEEPLAYER LAUNCHES WITH LAUNCHROCK

TweePLayer just launched it’s invitation page using LaunchRock.com. Over the past year we have been archiving Tweets about TV shows, sports, political events, conferences, and more. We will be harvesting Tweets for as many SXSW sessions as we can. If you are there, and can’t be in two places at once, Tweet “help” to @TweePLayer and you will get a response telling you how to start harvesting tweets from the event you are missing. If any sessions have videos up on YouTube you will be able to see the Tweets synced with the video of the event.

You will be able to watch the show on your DVR or Hulu later and take part in the Twitter conversation on TweePLayer.com just like you were on Twitter live during the show.
