Turner Broadcasting System’s truTV Partners with Tomorrowish as First in Industry to Capture, Curate, Synchronize and Stream, Public Social Media Conversation from All On-Demand Full-Episode Plays

Boston, MA-Tomorrowish, the first DVR for social media, announced today that the company has partnered with truTV to bring their TV Everywhere to the next level by offering a new breakthrough in social media feeds synchronized with online episode playback. Through a dynamic new system entitled Social Playback, the network’s popular truTV2GO.com will now capture and curate the most entertaining comments about a series episode from Twitter and Facebook, synchronize them with the episode’s time code, then display the archived “live” conversation during online viewing of full episodes. truTV will make the new Social Playback conversation-streaming function available for seven series that have been airing since June, with plans for a potential expansion to include truTV’s full lineup of original series in the near future. truTV also plans to incorporate the Social Playback feature within the truTV 2GO mobile app in 2013.

To make this new breakthrough possible, truTV worked with Tomorrowish, developer of the first-ever DVR for social media. At the center of the technology is the “Tomorrowish Machine Curation” tool, which uses rules-based filtering of posts and a proprietary scoring system in order to select and stream the best and most relevant posts. The tool also merges East and West Coast comments into a single synchronized conversation and allows for fine-tuning the curation down to individual posts, a function unique to the Tomorrowish platform.

“Reality programs have some of the highest social media engagement, so working with truTV is a fantastic opportunity to help increase that engagement with their programming,” said Tomorrowish CEO Mick Darling.

In addition to working with truTV, Tomorrowish also partnered with E! Entertainment Network and developed a tool that displayed social conversations for its talent discovery show “Opening Act” that premiered in the summer of 2012.

“There’s a natural connection between finding musical talent on the Internet and displaying the conversations from their fans,” said Mick Darling, CEO, Tomorrowish. “We were excited to connect fans and viewers who followed the developments of new talent on ‘Opening Act.’”

Tomorrowish offers services for content providers, as well as for viewers. For content providers the service helps engage their audiences and their Social Networks by using the “Tomorrowish Machine Curation” tool, which displays the most interesting and relevant posts. With the rules-based filtering of posts, it allows for fine-tuning the curation down to individual posts, unique to the Tomorrowish platform.

For viewers, the service curates new and archived posts about the video stream in sync with the original content, whether they were posted live, three hours, or three months later. Conversations from multiple airings, East Coast to West Coast, or later can be synced later and merged together.

Schedule, What Schedule? Rethinking Appointment TVPeople have more options than ever for what, how and, most importantly, when to view the content they love. With over 45% of cable households now using DVRs (64% for satellite), double digit increases eac
h year in social TV engagement, and the proliferation of second screen apps, on-demand and internet-only original content, what is the outlook for ‘appointment TV’ and how revenue share is calculated?
We will discuss if this business model is sustainable and the following questions:

1. Is “broadcast TV” dead or being revived with different times and platforms?
2. How do people want to consume content?
3. Can Social TV increase viewer engagement with time-shifted content?
4. Where can advertisers profit and not alienate their audiences?
5. Can traditional ‘over the top’ services keep pace with ‘over the web’ providers like Hulu, Netflix or YouTube?

In the Company of Companies

Tomorrowish has just been accepted as a MassChallenge Finalist!

That is the excellent news we got last Tuesday and you can read more about that direct announcement in the press release also on this blog.

Why this is a good thing beyond the simple fact we are in the running for prize money totaling over a million dollars is something I’ve had to explain multiple times to family and less entrepreneurial friends. Frankly, this isn’t about the prizes, though they’d be nice to get. The mentorships are better that “a nice to have” and I have high hopes they will give our team much needed insight into the huge number of challenges we are going to encounter.

The big deal, the thing that not only makes incubators valuable and useful, but also what sets MassChallenge apart from the other incubators, and accelerators out there is scale. MassChallenge is the worlds largest startup accelerator program with 125 finalists taking competing in the same space for the $1M in cash prizes and over $4M in services. All those startups will be working out of the same space interacting on a daily basis. When I compare this to the other excellent accelerator we were short listed for with only 5 startups, the potential for synergies and transferring knowledge should be obvious. In this case the old military saw that “Quantity has a quality all its own.” really highlights the quality provided by this huge quantity of passionate, talented, naive, grizzled, clever, hustling, creative entrepreneurs.

I personally have years long relationships with key personnel or founders of at least two other startups that made it to the finals. The interconnectedness of all these companies is a powerful force to Get Things Done in new innovative ways. Nate Aune a founder of one of a very cool finalist company, Appsembler and I have known each other since 2006 when I helped out with a Python based CMS (Plone) Meetup group he ran. That was even before I decided to really make a go of being an entrepreneur, but Nate was already doing it, and seeing the stuff he and others were working on at that meetup and others definitely helped me make the decision to jump into entrepreneurship.

I see MassChallenge as a great opportunity to interact and share all the crazy energy, experience, and innovation that comes from getting all these startups in one place. When I’m at the gym and lots of people are working their asses off it keeps me highly motivated to get off mine, and I plan on spending the next few months working my ass off surrounded by a bunch of talented people working just as hard.
